Why Protein Quality Matters: Not Just Percentage

When horse owners look at a feed tag or forage analysis, one of the first numbers they often notice is crude protein. A 14% protein feed sounds like it should provide more protein than a 12% feed, and a high-protein hay may seem automatically "better" than one with a lower percentage.

But when it comes to feeding horses, the percentage of crude protein tells only part of the story.

What Does Crude Protein Actually Tell Us?

Crude protein is an estimate of the total protein content of a feed or forage based on its nitrogen concentration. It gives us a useful starting point, but it doesn't tell us the quality of that protein or how well it meets the horse's amino acid requirements.

When a horse consumes protein, it is digested into amino acids. Those amino acids are absorbed and used throughout the body to build and repair tissues and produce important proteins, enzymes, hormones, antibodies, and other compounds.

Some amino acids can be produced by the horse, while others must be supplied through the diet. These are called essential amino acids. One of the most important is lysine.

Lysine is generally considered the first limiting amino acid in equine diets, meaning that if the diet doesn't provide enough lysine, the horse's ability to effectively use the rest of the dietary protein can be limited.

Other essential amino acids, including threonine and methionine, are also important when evaluating overall protein quality.

This is why simply feeding more crude protein isn't always the answer.

Imagine we have two diets.

Diet A contains 14% crude protein but relies primarily on protein sources with a relatively poor essential amino acid profile.

Diet B contains 12% crude protein but provides high-quality protein sources supplying adequate lysine and other essential amino acids.

Depending on the horse and the rest of the ration, Diet B may actually do a better job of meeting the horse's protein requirements.

The goal isn't to put as much protein into the diet as possible. The goal is to provide enough high-quality protein and the correct balance of essential amino acids for that individual horse.

Once the horse's amino acid requirements have been met, simply adding more protein doesn't automatically result in more muscle, better topline, or improved performance.

Forage Is a Major Protein Source

Forage is often discussed primarily as a source of fiber, but it can also make a significant contribution to the horse's daily protein and amino acid intake.

The amount and quality of that protein can vary considerably.

Plant species, maturity at harvest, growing conditions, harvesting practices, and storage can all influence the protein content and quality of forage. Younger, less mature forage generally contains more protein than very mature forage, while legumes such as alfalfa typically provide more protein and lysine than many grass hays.

This doesn't mean that every horse needs alfalfa or a high-protein forage. It means we need to understand what the forage is already contributing before deciding what needs to be added.

Forage testing becomes especially valuable here. Knowing the crude protein concentration is helpful, but when possible, looking at amino acid concentrations—particularly lysine—provides an even clearer picture.

Protein Quality Matters Most for Certain Horses

All horses require adequate protein and essential amino acids, but protein quality becomes particularly important when the body is actively building or repairing tissue.

Growing Horses

Foals, weanlings, and yearlings aren't simply maintaining existing tissue—they are building muscle, bone, connective tissue, and virtually every other structure in the body.

For these horses, supplying adequate high-quality protein and essential amino acids is critical. Simply increasing crude protein without paying attention to amino acid balance isn't the same thing as providing better nutrition.

Broodmares

Pregnant and lactating mares have increased protein and amino acid requirements, particularly during late gestation and milk production. Protein quality should therefore be considered as part of the entire broodmare ration.

Performance Horses

Exercise creates a need for muscle maintenance and repair. Performance horses need adequate energy first, but they also require appropriate amounts of high-quality protein to support muscle tissue and recovery.

A horse lacking topline doesn't automatically need a higher-protein feed. We need to evaluate total calorie intake, forage quality, workload, overall diet balance, and amino acid supply before deciding what is missing.

Senior Horses

Older horses may also benefit from careful attention to protein quality, particularly when maintaining muscle mass becomes more difficult. Dental problems can further complicate the situation if they reduce the horse's ability to consume or digest traditional forage effectively.

Start With the Forage

As with most areas of equine nutrition, evaluating protein should begin with the largest component of the diet: forage.

A good forage analysis tells us how much crude protein the horse is receiving and helps us determine whether the rest of the diet needs to provide additional protein or simply improve amino acid quality.

From there, we can strategically choose complementary ingredients and feeds.

Rather than chasing a crude protein percentage on a feed tag, ask a better question:

What is the quality of the protein in the entire diet?

A well-designed feeding program isn't about maximizing protein. It's about supplying the horse with the right amount of high-quality protein and essential amino acids to match their individual needs.

Because when it comes to protein, more isn't necessarily better—better is better.
